Did you know there were garment factories right here in Miami? As part of the How to Start your Clothing Line Course, the Fashion Institute of South Florida took several of its students (including one Instagram contest winner!) to visit a few little-known factories including a few cut & sew factories, a knit factory, a cutting room, and a printing factory! The students received a behind the scenes glimpse of the secret world of manufacturing right in their own backyard. I think we can all rejoice about saving a trip to LA.

“My favorite part of the trip was watching the sublimation process. The most interesting thing I learned was laying out the patterns via a computer system in order to maximize the number of pieces you can cut from a piece of fabric for production.”
“My favorite part about the trip was visiting Anna Sterling. It was motivating to see how not only does she love and enjoy her job, but how designers such as Planet can successfully translate their designs to the manufacturer and together create a beautiful and flourishing line. I hope that when I find a manufacturer in the future we have a relationship that is just as fluid.”
“It was extremely helpful finding out where the production industry is in Miami when we are going to be in the market. It’s hard to find places like this locally (especially online.) So now that we have some names it’ll be easier for us to find them better. The place I liked the most was our last visit to the printing factory. It was really nice to see that you can have your own idea of a design and put it on fabric, I think it’s really amazing.”
“After learning about all the resources we have here in Miami, I feel I can face any challenges in the fashion world and create beyond all expectations.”
